α-Hemolysin is a protein
toxin from the bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus. The
single subunit assembles on the membranes of blood cells (erythrocytes, platelets, monocytes...) as a heptamer to form
a transmembrane pore of diameter ~20 Å, resulting in cell lysis.
The key membrane spanning domain of the complex is a 14-stranded antiparallel
β-barrel formed from a single β-hairpin from each of the subunits.
